Top Upcoming Movies Before the New Year

2016 has given us plenty to talk about when it comes to movies.  From box office juggernauts like Deadpool, to the first R-rated animated feature film, Sausage Party, the year has been good us.  But 2016 isn’t over, and while many people are looking forward to the huge lineup of 2017 movies, there is still plenty to look forward to before the ball drops.

OCTOBER

The Girl on the Train is the first big movie set to hit theaters the first week of October.  It stars Emily Blunt in an intense thriller based on the book by Paula Hawkins.  The movie is directed by Oscar winning director, Tate Taylor.  The book was on The New York Times Best Sellers List and is compared to the 2014 hit, Gone GirlRelease Date: October 7th 2016.

The Accountant is an action thriller movie directed by Gavin O’Connor.  It stars Ben Affleck as an accountant/agent.  During the normal work week he poses as an ordinary small time accountant, but at night he makes a living as a forensic accountant for a dangerous criminal organization.  All is well until a Treasury agent, played by J.K. Simmons, discoverers his true identity and comes after Affleck’s character.  Release Date: October 14th, 2016.

NOVEMBER

Hacksaw Ridge is a biographical war film directed by Mel Gibson.  It is based on the true story about US Army medic Desmond Doss.  He is a Seventh-day Adventist conscientious objector that refuses to bear arms because of his faith, yet his is deployed into the heat of battle.  It is the story about him and his conflicts with killing while still managing to heal his fellow comrades in battle.  He was awarded the Medal of Honor for personally saving the lives of 75 soldiers under constant enemy fire.  Release Date: November 4th, 2016.

Arrival is a science fiction drama starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker.  It is about the mysterious landing of multiple alien aircraft around the globe.  Instead of the traditional “man fights alien or alien fights man” blueprint, the movie is about the peaceful interactions between humans and aliens.  Amy Adams plays a linguist that tries to learn and study alien language in order to communicate peacefully with them.  Release Date: November 11th, 2016.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a fantasy action film by J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter.  It is a spin-off of the Harry Potter series and a prequel to the books and films that she created.  It is set in the same universe as Harry Potter.  Fans are very excited to dive back into the unique world that J.K. Rowling created.  Release Date: November 18th. 2016.

DECEMBER

La La Land is a romantic musical drama starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and J.K. Simmons.  It is about a musician and aspiring actress that falls in love in Los Angeles.  Movie-lovers are extremely excited to see Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in a musical.  It is almost gaurunteed to be the next big American musical film.  Release Date: December 9th, 2016.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a spin-off movie of the legendary Star Wars franchise.  It is directed by Gareth Edwards and takes place sometime in between the third and fourth movies.  The story line is completely separate from the original movies, but it acknowledges all Star Wars history and events.  Release Date: December 16th.

Silence is the film 25 years in the making.  Legendary movie maker Martin Scorsese is the director behind this project.  Silence is categorized as a historical drama based off a novel by Shūsaku Endō.  The movie stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, and Ciarán Hinds. It is about two priests that face persecution when they travel to Japan trying to spread Christianity.  This movie is shaping up to be an Oscar contender with several legendary components.  Release Date: December 23rd, 2016.
